How to Set the Table

The way to set a table differs between countries and cultures. Below, we discuss English and European etiquette, which is also applied across other corners of the world. While most are familiar with laying knives facing inwards on the right side and forks on the left, here are some more guidelines.

CUTLERY

From the outside, lay cutlery for the first courses furthest from the plate, with main course utensils closest. Lay the dessert spoon and fork above the dinner plate.

PLACE SETTING

Set the side plate above the main fork or next to the starter fork, depending on the table spacing. Place glassware – water and wine glasses – above the knives.

CENTREPIECES

Consider fresh flowers in a vase or a detailed trivet with your casserole.

PLATES

At each setting, set a placemat. Place a dinner plate in the centre of the placemat, followed by a soup bowl on top of that.
